Hey folks, looking over the next few weeks, it doesn't make sense to me to do the Big and Little Dipper before we study constellations, so, this week we will do Constellations wk5 and next week will do the Big and Little Dipper wk4. That will give you another week to get shoeboxes. Feel free to bring them in anytime before next week. Thanks.

28Apr2024
Congratulations are due to our 6th grade Science Fair winners:
1st place Timothy Zinn
2nd place Michael Warren

We will be going to Main Event our last school day, Thursday, May 23. Students will arrive at school at the normal time. We will shuttle over to the Main Event at 10:30am. Pick up will be at Main Event at 3pm. Penny Wilkerson will be coordinating drivers so be thinking if you can transport. Also, cupcakes/brownies/cookies would be wonderful. Cost is $20 payable to me. That includes all the activities, 2 slices of pizza, unlimited drink, and 1hr unlimited gametime card. My Venmo is @Cindi-Rosenbaum if you want to pay that way. Adults welcome. Let me know.

This last week the kids learned what their real address is. Ask them about it. Try fitting that on an envelope.

Next week we'll look at Stars wk3. In addition the lesson will include how we measure length for space things. Another yummy time.

This week was all about satellites wk15. The kids engineered lego satellite models. Thursday they retook a quiz in class that many did not do well. Everybody got 110%. That's what I like to see.

Tuesday April9 unit3 test in class, closed book
Thursday April11 new unit, the Universe unit1 with lesson the Universe wk1.

Heads up-Main Event is in your future. May23

30Mar2024 Happy Easter! He has risen!

This week was about exploring space wk14. Most everyone protected their astronaut (egg) although we had a few fatalities. We decided cushioning was key.
We also took a virtual tour of the ISS and watched an animation of the space shuttle and launch. It's amazing what humans can do!

Next up-satellites wk15.

Tuesday quiz24 due
Thursday unit3 review for unit test April 9. No quiz.

Science fair Tuesday April 16 for the 5th graders and Tuesday April 23 for the 6th. Both at 6-8pm. Set-up at 5:30. Jan Sanders

22Mar2024
The astronomer reports were very enlightening. Also we're working through a book I have on living in outer space called How Do You Burp In Space? Fun, but sometimes gross!

Tuesday quiz23 due
Also we'll do our egg drop. The idea is to make a container strong enough to house an egg that we will drop about 22 ft. without breaking the egg. We have to protect our egg (astronaut)! Make the container at home but be ready to put in the egg in class. I have eggs.
Next up-a virtual tour of a space shuttle and the ISS.

Our next unit will be on the universe. One of the topics we'll be looking at will be the origin of the universe. So I discussed with the kids the idea of truth and where do we get truth. Jesus said in John 18:37 that he came to testify to the truth. John 14:6 says that Jesus is the Truth. And John 16:13 says that the Spirit of Truth (which we have in us) will guide us into all the truth. We had a great discussion.

Time to pick your question for the science fair. Let me know.

18Mar2024
Tuesday astronomer report (not a research paper, just some bullet-point facts to share about him/her in class
Also quiz22 due

2Mar2024
We had a great test review Thursday. It was delicious!

Tuesday unit2 test

Thursday We will begin our research of an astronomer. Please have your student pick one out and be ready for Thursday. We will present these in class when we come back from break.

Also Thursday we will start a conversation about the science fair. April 16 for 5th and the 23rd for 6th, both at 6pm. It's not too early to pick a subject. Anything to do with Earth science or astronomy. See pgs 86-107 in the student workbook and pgs 88-102, 238 in the teacher guide.

24Feb2024 Congrats to our spelling bee winners, Timothy and Jason (beat out the 7th graders ;D)

Fun week with flying bread, marshmellows, pretzels, watermelon (we ate Jupiter). Oh, and we studied a little and made a model of our solar system. Hopefully it made it home and you got to see it. Please encourage your children to bring home projects-many end up in our trash cans. This week was Uranus, Neptune and the minor members wk10.

Tuesday quiz21 due
Next up-Comets and Meteors wk11
Chapel this week and no quiz Thursday due to unit2 test coming up Mar5. We'll do a review on Thursday.

17Feb2024
This week we looked into 2 of the outer planets, Jupiter and Saturn. When I first started teaching this material, Jupiter had 66 moons. Now it's reported to have over 92 moons. Galileo named 4 of the largest, so we decided we needed to name our moon. I've gotten many good suggestions-next week we'll vote.

One of our future activities will be to research an astronomer of our choice. Since all the kids were somewhat familiar with Galileo, I gave them a more in -depth run down of his life, including his extensive astronomy work (without a telescope, using math) and his house arrest for heresy.

Next up-we'll finish with the outer planets, Uranus & Neptune plus other minor members wk10.
Tuesday quiz20 due      Also fruit solar system-yum!

10Feb2024
This last week was a delicious one-apples (Does the moon change shape? No, but it appears to.) and moon cookies (phases of the moon). I always say the best experiments are the ones you can eat.

Tuesday quiz19 due
Will continue our study of the Solar System with the outer planets, Jupiter and Saturn wk9.
Also we'll look deeper into the works of Galileo Galilei, the mathematician and astronomer.
One other thing, other moons have names, why not ours? So, we need suggestions on names for our moon. Bring in your ideas and we'll vote.

4Feb2024
Last week we studied the inner planets, Mercury, Venus and Mars wk7. Wouldn't want to live there. Also we made the promised crystals that we were supposed to make a while ago. We'll see how they turned out Tuesday.

Tuesday quiz18 due   This week we'll look deeper into the other inner planet, our home, good 'ole Earth and its moon wk8. Another yummy week coming up!!

28Jan2024
Last week we caught up on all our work with wk29, unit 5 test and the start of a new unit, unit2 Our Solar System, wk6 Sun. Plus chapel. Whew!

Tuesday we have
-wk7 Mercury, Venus & Mars
-quiz17 on the Sun due
-wk29 was all about erosion and one of the many things we talked
about was Niagra Falls (I grew up about an hour from there.) I'll have some video on that.

Btw, if your student gets a grade <60, I give them a new copy and expect them to fill that out and turn it in.
