Week of April 29th

We had a busy week and the kids did a great job of staying on task so we could get everything done.

We read chapters 1-5 in our book Frindle and learned 12 new vocabulary words. This week we will be reading chapters 6-9 and learning 12 more vocabulary words. We will also be going over the different types of sentences.

In Math we worked on division with and without remainders. Chapter 9 test is Monday, so please send in your child's test. Wednesday we will begin fractions. Page 157 we will be doing, but page 158 seems a bit confusing for the class. I have planned on doing a dividing/shading fraction worksheet in its place. So to be clear, I will not be doing page 158 with them, but a worksheet in its place.

We will be discussing Hydrocarbons in Science and we'll continue with the West region this week.

**Field Day Monday, May 6th.
**West Experience Wednesday, May 8th.

Week of April 22nd

We had a great week!
I want to thank Erica Moore and Katie Tipton for doing all the tie-dying! The kids had a blast and everything went so smoothly! We will be wearing the shirts on Monday, May 6th, for field day.
The class did an incredible job on their book reports! I am so proud of them! I have them all at home, so I can read each of them. I will return them Wednesday.
The 3rd grade will begin Frindle, by Andrew Clements, on Monday. Once again, you do not have to buy the book. I will be reading it all in class. We will have new vocabulary words that we will be working on.
In Math, we will be continuing with division and introducing division with remainders.
Science this week is about alcohol and esters. I will be doing an experiment with the kids, that will be a surprise for all the moms.
This last nine weeks, we are studying the West region. A little bird has told me that the West "party" in May, is going to be amazing!

Have a great weekend!!

Week of April 15th

I want to thank Kristen Hardy and Brianna Hedger for throwing such a great Southwest Experience this past Wednesday! The kids enjoyed making maracas, dancing, and painting a cactus!
This week we will begin studying the West region of the U.S. I will start that on Wednesday because Monday beginning at 1:30, the class will be tie-dying our shirts for Field Day. Please make sure your child has a shirt for Monday.  :)
We will be doing poetry on Monday, so please pack your child's poetry book as we will be reading the poems after we finish our book report presentations.
And yes-book reports are due Monday. We will start our presentations at 10:30 and then begin poetry. I will not have time to do composition or the pages in Lighting Lit on Monday, if you want to pick those up at home.
In Science, I will introduce organic compounds and our science project deals with the fats in our foods and how they leave an impression on paper.

I will begin reading the book Frindle  by Andrew Clements on Monday, April 22nd. You do not have to buy the book for your child. I will be reading the entire book in class and doing activities with it. Mrs. Maria and I wanted to do a novel study instead of doing different fairy tales. If you'd like to purchase the book, that's perfectly ok-but it's not necessary. I will provide copies of chapters if needed.

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend! It's finally going to be beautiful after all the rain!!

Monday, April 8th

Hey guys-I forgot to mention early dismissal on Monday, April 8th because of the eclipse.

We will be dismissing at 12:30 and we will not be eating lunch. Please pack a bigger than normal snack for your child so that they won’t “starve”. Lol! I can hear them now complaining about how hungry they are. Lol!

I hope everyone has gotten glasses for the eclipse. I still need to get mine!

Week of April 8th-12th

This upcoming week we will be having our Southwest Experience, so we will not be doing Science on Wednesday.

In Science, I will not be doing the experiment in the book. I will be doing another experiment on acids and bases using lemons, baking soda, and food coloring. It will be messy, but pretty!

We have our chapter 8 Math test on Monday, so please send in your child's test. For the Math test Monday, please make sure your child has the measurement conversion chart I gave them last week. They will need it for the test. They should have it in their binder. I will post a picture of it.
On Wednesday, we will be beginning division, with a review of multiplication and how the two go hand in hand.

In Language Arts, we will be finishing up The Wheel on the School. We will also be learning more about synonyms and homophones.

The next region we will be studying will be the Western region.

UPCOMING EVENTS

1. Book report due Monday, April 15th
2. Field Day- May 6th--I still need some moms to help me tie-dye, or if any moms would like to do the tie-dye, that would be awesome! Lol!
A white t-shirt for your child needs to be turned in by Wednesday, April 17th.
3. If you are planning on ordering books from the book order, please have them ordered by Wednesday, April 10th. After that day I will submit all orders. Thank you to those that have already ordered.

Have a great weekend!

Week of April 2nd

Hello all!

On Thursday, April 4th, I will NOT be doing pages 113 and 114. I will be teaching the concept of milliliters and liters in a different way with different activities. The pages listed in my syllabus for me to do, are best done at home one on one. Please feel free to do those pages with your child for more practice.

**Just a reminder:  Your child is NOT presenting their interview paper in class.
You do not have a do a special project for The Wheel on the School and the only book report that is needed is the book report that I assigned due April 15th.

**May 6th is Field Day at Cedar Springs. I would like for the 3rd grade to be tie-dye colors. I would love to have some parents volunteer to help me tie-dye shirts a week before. If you'd like to help, please let me know! I also need every child to bring a white t-shirt to dye. Please have the shirt in by April 18th.

We had a great Easter snack provided by Suzanne Kyker. They "painted" cookie eggs with their names on them!

I hope you all have a Blessed Easter!

Upcoming Events for the last 9 weeks

Hi all!
First off-I want to say thank you for all my wonderful gifts! You are all so generous and I am shocked every time! Thank you again for making my first year at Oak Grove incredible!

Unfortunately, I’ve not been able to grade the chunking test for spelling, so I don’t have any results to report. I will be grading them this weekend and I will send a group text explaining how it went. I hope that’s ok with everyone.

There has been some concern about all the report and projects coming up for this 9 weeks. So, after talking with Christy Parrot, we are scrapping some things.

1. The interview paper will not be presented in class.
2. There will not be a special project over The Wheel on the School.
3. There will not be another book report due in May.

The only report that needs to be done is the one that I assigned and is due April 15th for Red and April 16th for Blue.

I hope this clears up any and all concerns about upcoming projects, but if not please don’t hesitate to ask!

Enjoy your weekend!!

It's Spring Break!!!!!

Hi all!
We had a great week leading up to Spring Break!

In Science we had another fun, "scientific" lesson-separating mixtures. We separated Chex Mix into their own stacks. Then the best part was, we ate it all!
Our week after the break will involve crystals.

Math this past week was a little difficult on both days. Chapter 7 test seemed a little harder than usual and grades weren't as good as normal. Then we started measurement and that really threw some for a loop. Please continue working with your child on measurement and where the fourth, half, and three-fourths marks are on the ruler. I had it marked in sharpie on all the rulers and some students still had a hard time.

We're plugging along in The Wheel on the School. Some students don't have the book and aren't able to read at home. I have read bits and pieces when discussing vocabulary words, but that's it. If you don't have the book for your child, there is a free copy in PDF format online that is free to print off, if you choose. The week after break, chapters 8 and 9 will be read.

In our study of the Southwest, we've learned about the land, natural resources, water, and climate. Our next area of study will be landmarks of the Southwest.

**I want to say that I am sorry about the book report situation and the trouble some of you had with finding an appropriate book. The rules I am using are the same ones I used with middle schoolers. I realized that finding an appropriate book for a middle schooler wasn't a big deal because most of them could handle the books on those levels. Third graders on the other hand, can not. I honestly didn't even think about that when I was typing my expectations. I hope everyone has found a book that they are comfortable with their child reading, yet challenging at the same time.
If your child decides to change their book, that is fine. They can tell me the new title when we go back to school.

I hope everyone has a great break!! I know I will-even if I'm staying home!

Week of February 26th

How great did the kiddos soon the wax museum?! I was so proud of them and how they behaved while “performing” and how well their 3-way boards turned out!!

Last week was a bit crazy, so I’m glad this upcoming week will be back to normal. In Math, we have chapter 7 test on Monday and we’ll begin measurement on Wednesday.
In Language Arts, we will be reviewing chapters 6 and 7 by answering comprehension questions. We will also finish our key stories from a few weeks ago.

Science is concentrating on separating mixtures and our experiment involves markers and coffee filters.

In US Regions, we will be reading about the land in the Southwest.

Week of Feb. 26th

We had a great week this past week!

We started The Wheel on the School and learned about synonyms and antonyms. This coming week, chapters 4 and 5 will be read and be discussed in class. We will also be discussing paragraph structure for the compare/contrast paper. Please make sure you child has chosen their topics they want to compare and contrast by Monday. I will be using their topics to help in the writing process.

Math was multiplying by 10's, along with area. This coming week we will be continuing with area and dive back into perimeter. Our chapter 7 test is coming up on Monday, March 4th, so a review will be on the agenda for Friday, March 1st.

In Science we will be doing mixtures. On Wednesday, the experiment will be with bottled water and different powder flavors we can "mix". We will also have a special "mixture" snack.

With our study in US Regions of the Southwest, we will be looking at the natural resources that come from the Southwest.

The wax museum begins at 9 AM on Monday, February 26th. Make sure your child is dressed for their "part". They are more than welcome to bring other clothes to change into once the museum ends.
Your child will leave their items with the volunteer moms in the castle and they will then come to class. You and your family are more than welcome to wait in the lobby or outside until the museum starts. The museum should end by 10 AM.
Just an FYI...Math and Language Arts will be pushed back Monday because of the museum, so I'm not sure if I will get to Science and US Regions.

On Monday, March18th, I will be sending information home about the book report that will be due on Monday, April 15th.

**I wanted to mention something I have noticed since doing area problems in Math. All the kiddos know the formula for Area is l x w, but when grading their workbooks, they are missing several problems. It's not because of the formula, it's because they don't know their multiplication facts. Please work on multiplication facts with your child. There are several neat websites online that are games, but it's practicing multiplication. When we start division in the next 9 weeks, those facts will definitely be needed. I've listed some websites below, if you're interested.

1. multiplication.com
2. timestables.com
3. mathplayground.com

I appreciate you all so much!

Valentine’s Week

Wow! What a crazy, yet fun week! We have several people we need to thank to make our fun days possible.

Thank you to Hannah Hunley and Tenile Piersma for such a great Midwest Experience! The kids enjoyed playing games, making corn, and learning even more about the Midwest!

Thank you to Karli Campbell and Tara Thomas for a fun Valentine’s party! The class made the cutest Valentine bags and played the funniest game!

This coming week things return to normal. We are continuing with area and then hit multiplying by 10’s.
We are starting a new novel, The Wheel on the School. I will be reading the first chapter at school, but the rest of the book will be read at home. I will also introduce information about a compare and contrast paper.
Science involves oxidation and reduction. We will be cleaning silver for our experiment Wednesday-if you want to send yours in. ;)
In US Regions, we are starting the Southwest.

We are going to have a great week!
