Weekly Update

Hello everyone!  I hope you are enjoying this weekend.  It seems like after spring break, the weeks just go by so fast.  Here is our update for the week:


Recap:  

Jesus Calling:  We read Mary and Martha and Jairus’ Daughter and the Sick Woman.

Language: Letter of the Week - Ww 

We read Worm’s Wagon and Wake Up, Sleepy Bear.

We played “Get Out of the Wagon,” “What Am I Thinking,” and “Thumbs Up/Down” (or they could wiggle) when I said a word beginning with the /w/ sound.  

We used four big lines to make a W into a worm and did our journal page.  

We also played some word games with our puppet, Ziggy. 


Math:  We listened to a movement song called 1 to 30 and 30 to 1.

We read Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? and practiced reading color words and did a color/pattern review sheet.  We also did a couple of counting and number recognition sheets.


Theme:  Fins and Feathers - We read True or False Birds and Whales.  We did a sheet where they had to follow directions to complete the page.  

We also used this time to do a coloring page called God Made a Colorful World.  


Coming Up:  

Jesus Calling:  We will read The Blind Man and Ten :Lepers.

Language:  Letter of the Week - Xx

Math: Time - This week we will work on ordinal numbers and sequencing.  

Theme:  Our Green Earth

Hello everyone!  I hope you all enjoyed this beautiful weekend.  Here is a look at some of what we did this week in class and some of what is to come.  

Recap:  

Jesus Calling: We read The Fishes and Loaves and Jesus Walks on Water. 

Language:  Letter of the Week - Vv 

We read the short poem from The Zigzag Zebra, Vera Viper’s Valentine, and The Very Hungry Caterpillar.  We practiced reading the sight word “very,” played “What Am I Thinking,” and “Thumbs Up/Down.”  We also played some word games with Ziggy, did our journal page, and used two big lines to make a V into a vase.  


Math:  Numbers to 30 - We practiced counting to 30, made a number line from 1-10, 11-20, and 21-30 and looked for number patterns.  We played “Number Bingo” and worked in groups to put numbers in order from 1-30.  


Theme:  Weather - We read The Rainy Day, The Snowy Day, The Sunny Day and The Windy Day.  We practiced reading weather words, played “Guess the Weather,” and made a weather wheel.  We listened to a song called "The Water Cycle" and did a coloring sheet to practice.  We also discussed our favorite types of weather.  


Coming Up:  

Jesus Calling:  We will read Mary and Martha and begin reading Jesus Heals the Sick.

Hello everyone!  I hope you all are having a great weekend.  I spent the weekend getting ready for my son’s 16th birthday, which we celebrated today.  Here is a look at what we did this past week and a little of what is coming up.  

Recap:  

Jesus Calling:  We read The Good Samaritan and The Storm.  

Language:  We introduced syllables by clapping our names and other words that they chose to do.  We read Max’s ABC and did a capital/lowercase matching sheet.  We have three more of these to do as well.  Also, to review sounds, we played “Ziggy Takes a Trip.”  

Math:  We played “Mystery Numbers,” a number recognition game, and did a counting sheet where they had to count the objects and circle the numbers.  

Theme:  Seasons - We read Curious George Discovers the Seasons and did a season sorting activity as a class.  We also shared our favorite season and why we liked it.  


Coming Up:  

Jesus Calling:  We will read Fishes and Loaves and Jesus Walks on Water.

Language:  Letter of the Week - Vv

Math:  Numbers to 30

Hello everyone!  We had a great week celebrating Easter.  Thank you so much to Bethany, Lindsay, and Rebecca for such a special Easter party.

Show and Tell will be on Thursday, April 4.


Recap:  

Jesus Calling:  We read The Lost Coin and The Prodigal Son.

Language:  We used this time to read The Easter Story and discuss what Easter means.  We also did a sequencing activity.

Math:  Subtraction - We acted out subtraction stories and did a subtraction sheet to practice this skill.  

Theme:  Easter - We used this time to have our Easter party.  We also read It’s Not Easy Being a Bunny, It’s Better Being a Bunny, and Bunny With a Big Heart.  We did a cute bunny craft and did a couple of coloring sheets.  


Coming Up:  

Jesus Calling:  We will read The Good Samaritan from the section of Jesus’ Great Stories and The Storm from the section of Jesus Works Miracles. 

Language:  Since it is a short week, we will review sounds we have covered so far.  

Math:  Review

Hello everyone!  Happy Spring!  Thank you so much for my gift bag full of goodies.  It was so thoughtful, and I love it.  You all are amazing.  Also, thank you to Kelly and Marina for watching the class while I had lunch with the teachers.  It was a great week!  


Recap:

Jesus Calling:  We read The Farmer and His Seeds and The Little Lost Lamb.

Language: Letter of the Week - Uu 

We read Umbrellabird’s Umbrella, Great Day For Up, and the poem from The Zigzag Zebra. 

We played “What Am I Thinking” and “Thumbs Up/Down or Stand Up/Sit Down.”

We made a U into an underwater scene and did our journal page.  

We also listened and danced to “Under the Sea.”  


Math:  Subtraction - We read Little Number Stories Subtraction and did a couple of activities to introduce this skill.  I drew pictures of food on the board, and they used a picture of a shark to pretend to eat a certain amount.  We also did a coin toss subtraction game.  We made subtraction sentences to go along with each activity. 


Theme:  Spring/Seasons/Plants - We read The Tiny Seed and planted our own tiny seeds.  We also read about the parts of a plant, what they do, and the lifecycle of a plant, and we made a little plant booklet.  


Coming Up:

Jesus Calling:  We will read The Lost Coin and The Prodigal Son.

 Language: The next couple of weeks will be review weeks since they are both short weeks.

Hello everyone!  I hope that you all had a wonderful spring break.  It was so nice to have a little extra time to spend with family and friends.  I am looking forward to seeing everyone again this week.  


Recap:  

Jesus Calling:  We read The Beatitudes and The Lord’s Prayer.

Language:  Letter of the Week - Tt 

We read Tiger Can’t Sleep, When Tilly Turtle Came to Tea, and the poems from The Zigzag Zebra and Lizard Lou. 

We used a big and little line to make a T into a tiger, played “Thumbs Up/Down and What Am I Thinking,” and did our journal page.  


Math:  Addition - We read One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish and did a math sheet to go along with this.


Theme:  St. Patrick’s Day - We talked about who St. Patrick was and why we celebrate this day.  We did a pot of gold/rainbow craft and traced and colored/decorated shamrocks.  


Coming Up:

Hello everyone!  I love that it is starting to feel like spring.  We had fun celebrating Joseph’s birthday.  Here is a look at what we did.   


March Bible Verse:

Show and Tell will be Thursday, March 7.

Report Cards will go home Wednesday, March 7 as well. 

Spring Break - March 11-15


Recap:  

Jesus Calling:  We read John the Baptist and Twelve Helpers.

Reading:  Letter of the Week - Ss

We read Seal’s Silly Sandwich and the poems from The Zigzag Zebra and Lizard Lou.   

We played “Thumbs Up/Down” and “What Am I Thinking.” 

We used two little curves to make an S into a seahorse and learned a few facts about seahorses.  We also did our journal page.


Math:  Addition - We read The Tortoise and the Hare and played an addition game to go along with the story.  


Theme:  Dr. Seuss - We read The Cat In the Hat and played Pin the Hat on the Cat.  We also did a coloring sheet to go along with the story.  


We also spent some time taking a look at the 3rd grade Wax Museum and the 4th grade History Fair.  It was something different to do, and I think they enjoyed it.  


Coming Up:  

Jesus Calling:  We are reading about Jesus the Teacher.

Hello everyone! It is hard to believe that we are already starting the last week of February, and Spring Break is almost here.  We had fun celebrating Lenya’s birthday this week.   Here’s a look at most of what we did and a little bit of what is coming up.  


Recap:  

Jesus Calling:  We read A Baby Named John and Jesus the Boy.

Language:  Letter of the Week - Rr

We read Rosie Rabbit’s Radish, Read to Tiger, and the poems from Lizard Lou and The Zigzag Zebra.  

We used one big line, one little curve, and one little line to make an R into a rabbit and did our journal page.  We played “Thumbs Up/Down” and “What Am I Thinking” to practice the sound.  

We also played “Count the Words” with Ziggy.  


Math:  Number Bonds - We learned that number bonds show how two smaller numbers work together to make a bigger number.  We did some examples on the board like boys/girls, teacher/students, as well as others.  We then used Hershey's Kisses as counters to complete penguin number bonds.  We also did number bond bowling and number bond bean bag toss.  


Theme:  Presidents - We learned that we celebrate the birthdays of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln in February.  We talked about who the president is and where they live.  We also talked about how they are on money and did a coloring sheet.  We read Duck for President and did a story sequencing activity.

Jesus Calling:  We will read Twelve Helpers and Jesus the Teacher.

Hello!  I hope you all are having a great weekend.  Thank you to Rebecca and Allison for planning a fun Valentine’s Day Party.  We love when you all can be in the class with us.  

Recap:  

Jesus Calling:  We read Beautiful Queen Esther and Nehemiah the Builder. 

Language:  We used this time to read books about Valentine’s Day.  We read Pete the Cat Valentine’s Day is Cool and Happy Valentine’s Day, Mouse.  We also used markers and stickers to make cards. We also read a story called When We’re Together, which is a story about friendship.  

Math:  We did a couple of Valentine math sheets for review.  We also started talking about number bonds.  We used different scenarios as well as using Hershey Kisses to practice making number bonds.  

Theme:  We did a torn paper craft called “I Love You to Pieces” and used this time to have our Valentine’s Day Party. 


Coming Up:  We will read A Baby Named John and Jesus the Boy.

Hello!  I hope everyone is having a great weekend!  Here is a look at what we did this past week and a little of what is to come.  

 

Our Valentine’s party will be on Thursday, February 15.

Recap: 

Jesus Calling: We read Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego and Daniel and the Lion’s Den.

Language:  Letter of the  Week - Qq 

We talked about how the letter q and u are like best friends and that q does not really go anywhere without u, so the two letters together me the /kw/ sound.  

We read:

The Quiet Quail

Thump, Quack, Moo 

Quiet, There’s a Canary in the Library

The Zigzag Zebra poem about a porcupine

We played “What Am I Thinking” and “Thumbs Up/Down” to practice the sound.  We used two big curves to make a Q into a quail and did our journal page.  

 

Math:  Numbers to 20 - We read Chicka Chicka 1 2 3 and danced to a song called Let’s Count to 20.  We used tens/ones friends to show numbers to 20.  To practice recognition, we played musical numbers and did a number activity sheet.  We also made two number lines 1-10 and under that line, we did another one 11-20.  Using the number lines, we talked about number patterns.  

 

Theme:  We read a nonfiction book called Dinosaurs and a fiction book called Mine-O-Saur.  We did a coloring sheet and a dinosaur craft.  We did a dinosaur movement activity and danced to a song called We are the Dinosaurs.  

 

Coming Up:  

Jesus Calling:  We will read Beautiful Queen Esther and Nehemiah the Builder.  

Language:  The calendar says that we will be doing the letter “R” this week and review next week.  I am going to change that and do the review this week and “R” next week.

Hello everyone!  We had a fun week celebrating our 100th Day of School and Groundhog Day.  Thank you to Nash’s mom and Sienna’s mom for a fun party.  We love when you all can join us.  


Coming Up:  

Jesus Calling:  We read Isaiah Meets God and God’s Prophet Daniel. 

Language:  Letter of the Week - Pp - We read the poems from The Zigzag Zebra and Lizard Lou, The Pigs’ Picnic, Sally and the Purple Socks, and Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear.  We also read two nonfiction books about penguins and polar bears.  Mrs. Wolfe read A Mud Pie for Mother and One Cool Friend.  We played “Thumbs Up/Down” and “What Am I Thinking” to practice the sound.  We used a big line and a little curve to make a P into a penguin, did our journal page, played ‘Hot Potato,”  and did a polar bear activity.

Math:  We actually spent this time reviewing number recognition and writing numbers from 1-10.  We read Pigs Love Potatoes, which is a counting book and did a number recognition bingo type game and a number tracing sheet.  This time was also used to celebrate the 100th Day of School.  

Theme:  Groundhogs - We read Groundhog Gets a Say, which had a lot of facts about groundhogs.  We made a picture graph with our predictions of whether or not Punxsutawney Phil would see his shadow or not. On Friday, we did check to see that he did not see his shadow, and I hope he is right.

Hello everyone!  I hope you all are having a wonderful weekend.  We had a great week back at school.  Everyone seemed so excited to see each other and play together again.  We also had fun celebrating Stanton’s birthday with some yummy cookies.  


100th Day of School Party - Thursday, February 1

Recap:  

Jesus Calling:  We read Elisha and the Chariots of Fire and Jonah and the Big Fish. 


Language:  Letter of the Week - Oo

We read a nonfiction book about Octopus facts.  We also read Old Bear and His Cub and the poems from The Zigzag Zebra and Lizard Lou.  We played “What Am I Thinking” and “Thumbs Up/Down” to practice the sound.  We made an O into an octopus.  We learned that O is a vowel and that it makes 4 sounds, but we only focused on the short and long sound of O.  We also did our journal page.  We did an activity called “Which sentence is longer” and “Count the Words” with Ziggy.  


Math:  Comparing Numbers - We reviewed numbers 1-12 and compared them to see which was more or less.  To do this, I held up a card, and they had to tell me one more. I held them up again, and they had to tell me one less.  I also showed them a number 5 card.  They each took a turn picking a card and had to decide if it was more or less than 5.  We did one more activity where they had to each pick a card and compare them to see which card was more or less.  


Theme:  Winter/Snow - Before we were out for snow, I read a story by Ezra Jack Keats called The Snowy Day.  This week, I read another story called The Snowy Day.  We reviewed the first one and compared it to the second one.  We also read The Mitten and did a sequencing activity with the animals from the story.  We also did a snowflake coloring sheet.  


Coming Up:

Jesus Calling:  We will read Isaiah Meets God and God’s Prophet Daniel. 


Language:  Letter of the Week - Pp


Math:  Numbers (We will continue to compare numbers, introduce numbers to 20, and celebrate our 100th Day of School.  We will also do a graphing activity to go along with Groundhog Day.)


Theme:  Groundhogs

Hello everyone!  It was so nice to be back and see everyone.  They all did such a great job getting back into our daily routine.  


Recap:

Jesus Calling:  We read about God’s Mighty Prophets.  

Language:  Letter of the Week:  Nn - We read I’m Not Sleepy and The Nicest Newt.  We played “What Am I Thinking” and “Thumbs Up/Down” to practice the sound.  We also used three big lines to make an N into a nest and did our journal page.  

Math:  Comparing Sets - They helped me read The Three Little Pigs, and then we compared houses/doors/pigs/wolves.  We compared teachers to students and boys to girls.  We also played musical chairs and compared chairs to students.  

Theme:  Winter/Snow - We read A Snowman for Little Bear, The Mouse That Jack Built, and The Snowman Storybook, and we painted the cutest little snowmen.  


Coming Up:

Jesus Calling:  We will continue to read about God’s Mighty Prophets.

Language:  We will review letters/sounds we have learned so far.

Math:  Comparing Numbers

Theme:  Social Studies - We will learn about Tennessee State symbols and map skills.

Hello everyone and Happy 2024!  I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas.  First, thank you so much for all of the presents that you all gave me. It was so kind and thoughtful.  Also, thank you to C.C.’s mom and Zeke's mom for such a fun and special Christmas party.  It is always so nice when parents can be in the classroom.  Looking forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday and hearing all about what everyone did over the break.
