Weekly Post

Hello!  We did it! This has been such a wonderful year, and I am so sad that this is our last week.  I am so proud of their hard work and effort that they put into it.  They are all so ready for Kindergarten.  Thank you for such a fun year!  
 
Recap:  
Jesus Calling:  We read Paul's Shipwreck and began reading Paul the Writer. 
 
Reading/Handwriting/Language:  We played "Listen for the Sound" with Ziggy.  We also played a syllable game called "Hop to it."  I called out a word, and they had to hop the number of syllables.  Then we did a sheet to go along with it.  We also worked on opposites and sight words.  
 
Math:  We did some math review stations with an addition game, pattern/shape blocks, sorting, and counting activities.  We also did a sheet where they had to follow directions to practice ordinal numbers.  
 
Theme: Ocean Animals - We read a nonfiction book about ocean animals and Rainbow Fish.  We used watercolors, googly eyes, and sequins to decorate a seahorse.  We also painted ocean themed sun catchers.  
 
Coming Up:
Jesus Calling:  We will continue to read Paul the Writer and John's Dream.  
 
Tuesday:  We will have our PJ/Popsicle/Play Day.  They can bring in a couple of stuffed animals for math activities and free play time.  
 
Thursday:  We will have our End of the Year Party.

Hello!  I hope everyone is having a great weekend.  It is so hard for me to believe that I only have two more weeks with your sweet children.  
 
Recap:  
Jesus Calling:  We read Lydia Believes and The Jailer and the Earthquake.
 
Reading:  We played "Listen for the Sound" with Ziggy.  We reviewed rhyming words by playing "Rhyming Bingo" and "Erase a Rhyme."  For "Erase a Rhyme, I drew pictures on the board.  I would then call out a word, and they had to erase the picture that rhymed with my word.  Since Hokey rhymes with Pokey, we did the Hokey Pokey.  We also did a couple of letter matching sheets.  
 
Math:  Money - We read Bunny Money and practiced recognizing coins and their values. We examined and sorted coins.  I gave them a card with either a picture of a coin or one with the value.  They had to walk around and find who had their match.  We did a cut and paste piggy bank/coin sheet and a money matching sheet.  We also practiced counting by 1s, 5s, 10s, and 25s when  counting pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters.  I gave them each some play money/coins and let them shop in the treasure box. 
 
Theme:  Wild Animals - We read Giraffes Can't Dance and some nonfiction books about animals. We traced our hands/arms and made a giraffe, and we also painted a lion's face.  
 
Coming Up:  
Jesus Calling: We will read Paul and the Unknown God and Paul's Shipwreck.
 
Reading:  We will continue to review letters/sounds.  We will also play a game to review syllables.

Hello!  I am so sorry for the late post.  I hope everyone had a wonderful Mother's Day.  It was so much fun watching them participate in field day.  I hope they had fun a day.  
 
Recap:  
Jesus Calling:  We read Saul and Peter and the Angel.
 
Reading:  We played "Listen for the Sound"  with Ziggy.  We read a book about the alphabet and did a letter matching sheet.  We also played a game where they had to match the object with the correct letter.  
 
Math:  We worked on Days of the Week and Months of the Year.  First, we read the story of the Creation.  We sang and danced to a song about the days of the week.  We learned there are seven days in a week and that some of them are weekdays and others are weekends.  I gave them each a card with a day of the week, and they had to get in order.  Then we did a color, cut, and glue caterpillar days of the week sheet.  For months, we also sang and danced to a song about the months.  I gave them each a sheet with their birthday month, and we made a class birthday graph.  
 
Theme:   The theme was farm animals, but we spent most of this time working on Mother's Day activities.  We read A Mud Pie for Mother and Momma, Will You.  We made a couple of Mother's Day cards/sheets and painted keychains. 
 
Coming Up:

Hello!  Happy First Day of May!  It is hard for me to believe that we are starting our last month of school.

Recap:
 
Jesus Calling:  We read Joy Came Down and Phillip and the Ethiopian.
 
Reading:  We read Sleepy ABC and The Big Bug Book of the Alphabet. We went on an alphabet scavenger hunt to search the room for objects beginning with each sound.  We also did an activity in which I gave some of them a card with the capital letter and some the lowercase letter.  They had to walk around and find their matching partner.  Our language activity was called "Silly Mistakes" with Ziggy.  Ziggy made mistakes while reading several nursery rhymes, and we had to correct him.  They also helped me read Llama Llama Home with Mama to practice rhyming words. 
 
Math:  Time - We read the nursery rhyme Hickory Dickory Dock and Boom Chicka Rock.  We practiced putting the numbers 1-12 in order to make a clock and decorated a clock.  We discussed the hour, minute, and second hand and worked on telling time..  We used our arms to make the times 3:00, 6:00, 9:00, and 12:00.  I gave them certain times and we discussed what we might be doing at those times, and then they had to show me the times on their clocks.  Then they did a sheet to practice telling time.
 
Theme:  Bugs and Spiders - We discussed everything we knew about bugs and spiders and shared our favorite type of bug.  We read The Grouchy Ladybug and used our clocks to show the times to go along with the story.  We did an insect movement activity.  We also read Where Butterflies Grow and did a cut/paste/color activity of the lifecycle of a butterfly.  Then we colored butterflies.

Hello!  I hope everyone had a great weekend.  Here is a look at some of what we did in class this past week and a little of what is to come.  
 
Recap:  
Jesus Calling:  We read Doubting Thomas and Jesus Goes to Heaven.  
 
Reading/Handwriting:  Letter of the week- Z z - We read the poems from The Zigzag Zebra and Lizard Lou and Llama Llama Misses Momma (The teacher in the story is a zebra.)  We played "What am I Thinking?" and "Thumbs Up/Down to practice the sound.  We used two little lines and a big line to make a Z into a zebra, did our journal page, and a zebra coloring sheet.  We also played "Echo" and "Snack Time" with Ziggy.  Both of those activities focused on isolating the ending sound of the word.  
 
Math:  We worked on sequencing and ordinal numbers.  First, we took turns talking about our morning and nighttime routines focusing on using the words first, second, third, fourth and fifth.  Then we sang a song to the tune of If You're Happy and You Know it but sequenced a morning routine.  For example, we sang, "If you're happy and you know it, wake up, brush your teeth, eat your breakfast, go to school."  We did a couple of sequencing sheets together as a class.  Then we read The Tortoise and the Hare, and they worked independently on a sequencing sheet to go along with story.  On Thursday, we acted out Five Little Fishies.  I gave them each a little fish with ordinal numbers first through fifth, and they had to get in the correct order.  Then we read Ten Little Rubber Ducks and ordered ten little ducks from first through tenth.  We then did a sheet where they had to follow directions by coloring the correct object.  
 
Theme:  Our Green Earth - We talked about how the Earth helps us and how we can help the Earth.  We did a coloring sheet of the Earth and a cut and paste sheet where they had to sort how we help the Earth and how the 
Earth helps us.  
 
Coming Up:
Jesus Calling:  We will read Joy Came Down and Philip and the Ethiopian. 
 
Reading/Handwriting:  We will review letters and language skills.  
 
Math:  We will work on telling time.

Hello!  I hope everyone had a wonderful Easter.  Thank you to Rachel Stankus and Brad Scott for a special Easter celebration.  
 
Recap:  
Jesus Calling:  We read Easter Sunday.
 
Reading/Handwriting:  Letter of the Week - Y y - We read the poems from The Zigzag Zebra and Lizard Lou, played "Thumbs Up/Down," and "What Am I Thinking."  We did a couple of yoga poses and played Yeti in My Spaghetti.  We used a little line and a big line to make a Y into a yak and did our journal page.  For language, we played "Finish the Word" with Ziggy, which focuses on isolating the ending sound.  
 
Math:  Numbers to 30 - I placed number cards 1-20 on the board and gave them 21-29 and they had to place them in the correct order and then we added 30.  Then they worked with a partner to place numbers 1-30 in order.  We also worked on counting to 30 by ones and by tens. 
 
Theme:  We read It's Not Easy Being a Bunny and did a bunny painting.  We read The Tale of Peter Rabbit and did a sequencing activity.  We also used watercolors to paint Easter eggs.

Hello!  I hope everyone is having a great weekend. We will celebrate Easter this week, and our party will be on Thursday.  
 
Recap: 
 
Jesus Calling:  We read Good Friday
 
Reading/Handwriting:  Letter of the Week - X x - Since there are not many words that begin with the /ks/ sound, we also talked about words ending with this sound.  We read the poems from The Zigzag Zebra and Lizard Lou and A Xylophone for X-Ray Fish.  We did Thumbs Up/Down while listening for the /ks/ sound at the end of the word.  To practice writing the X, they each took turns playing Tic Tac Toe with me on the board.  We also used two big lines to make an X into a fox and did a couple of X coloring sheets.  For language, we played "Silly Sentences" with Ziggy.  I would read a sentence with all of the words beginning with the same sound, and they had to tell me the sound.  
 
Math:  Numbers to 30 - We started by estimating different amounts of Hershey's Kisses up to 30.  When counting them, we placed them on tens frames.  We also used our tens' friends/ones' friends to practice making numbers from 10-30.  On Thursday, they played "Musical Numbers" to practice recognizing the numbers 20-30 and did a couple of sheets to practice writing the numbers.  
 
Theme:  Fins and Feathers - We read a nonfiction book and learned some interesting facts about birds.  They practiced hopping in a straight line like birds do on a tree branch.  We also dipped craft feathers into paint and wrote our names. On Thursday, they read Clown Fish and a book about a momma and baby bird and did some dot-to-dot pages.

Weekly Update

Hello!  I apologize for posting a little later than usual.  My computer was not cooperating today.  I thought I would try one more time tonight, and it finally worked.  Somehow, I was a day off last week.  We will have Show-and-Tell on Thursday of this week.

Recap:  
Jesus Calling:  We read Jesus is Arrested and Peter Denies Jesus. 
 
Reading/Handwriting:  Letter of the Week - W w - We read poems from The Zigzag Zebra and Lizard Lou and a book titled The Windy Day. To practice the sound, I read a list of words, and they stood up and wiggled if the word I said made the /w/ sound at the beginning of the word.  We also played What Am I Thinking."  We practiced reading the sight word "we."  We also added a verb to the word to make short sentences like, We play. We read books. We sing. We eat lunch.  They each took turns making up a sentence.  We played a game called "Get Out of the Wagon."  I placed three pictures of objects in a wagon, two beginning with the same sound and one that did not.  They had to determine which one did not belong and told it to "get out of the wagon."  To practice forming W w, we traced in the air, used our fingers to make Vs into Ws, and used popsicle sticks.  We used four big lines to make a W into a worm and completed our journal page. 
 
Math:  Subtraction - On Tuesday, we played a game that I called Sharky Subtraction.  I drew several fish on the board and they took turns being Sharky and ate/erased a certain number of fish based on the subtraction sentence that I gave them, and then we counted how many were left.  Then, I gave them some goldfish to practice subtraction sentences.  They counted out a certain amount, and then I gave them a number to take away/eat and counted how many were left.  On Thursday, I drew pictures on the board and they made up subtraction stories to go along with my pictures.  They illustrated subtraction stories of their own and did a subtraction sheet.  
 
Theme: Weather - First, we discussed everything that we already knew about weather.  I read a poem called "Outside," and they listened for all of the weather words.  I read a nonfiction book about weather and seasons.  We demonstrated how the Earth tilts and rotates around the sun to cause the seasons.  We read It's Sunny and It's Rainy.  We discussed words like plop, splash, swish, and squish and that these words are called onomatopoeia words.  We made weather wheels and played "Guess the Weather."  I placed several pictures of different types of weather in a bag.  They took turns picking a picture and describing it for the class to guess. We read Little Cloud by Eric Carle.  We squirted white paint onto blue paper and then folded it to make a cloud picture.  Most of them looked like butterflies or x-rays.  :)  We learned about the water cycle and did a water cycle coloring sheet.  
 
Coming Up:
Jesus Calling:  The next two stories are Good Friday and Easter Sunday, so I am going to save those for next week.  This week, I will read devotions from a book called Jesus Wants All of Me.

Hello!  Here is a look at some of what we did last week and the skills we will be working on this week.

Recap:  
Jesus Calling:  We read Palm Sunday and The Last Supper. 
 
Reading/Handwriting:  Letter of the Week - Vv - We practiced the sight word "very" and read The Very Hungry Caterpillar.  We sequenced the order of food in which the caterpillar ate.  To practice the sound, we played What Am I Thinking and Thumbs Up/Down.  We listened for the /V/ sound at the beginning and end of the word.  We also read our poems from The Zigzag Zebra and Lizard Lou.  We practiced making V v by tracing in the air and making the V with our fingers.  We also used two big lines to make a V into a vase and practiced V in our journal.  
 
Math:  Subtraction - We learned that the symbol for subtraction is a minus sign, and it means to take away.  I showed them examples of subtraction sentences on the board, and we acted out some subtraction situations.  For example, we had six bunnies and two hopped away.  We did this several times with different animals, so they all had a chance to act out a couple of different situations.  We then played a game called "Subtraction Smash."  They each had six balls of Play Doh and a subtraction mat.  We each rolled a number cube and smashed that number of balls and then counted how many were left.  We also took turns working out a subtraction problem on the board and did a subtraction sheet.  
 
Theme:  Spring/Plants - We discussed that we started a new season called spring and talked about all of the signs of spring that we could think of.  We read a poem called Plants and some short little booklets about the parts of a plant and what the parts do.  We also read one about the life cycle of a plant.  We read The Tiny Seed and planted our own tiny sunflower seed.  We used watercolors to paint flowers.  We also made a little booklet called "My Parts of a Plant Booklet," and then they read it to me.

Hello!  I hope everyone had a nice spring break. I am looking forward to seeing your sweet children.  
 
Recap:  
Jesus Calling:  We read The Widow's Gift and The Glory of Jesus.
 
Reading/Handwriting:  Letter of the Week - Uu - We practiced reading the sight word "up" and some short u word families.  We read It's a Great Day for Up and the poems from The Zigzag Zebra and Lizard Lou.  We played "What am I Thinking" and Thumbs Up/Down to practice the sound.  We traced Uu in the air and used toy cars to trace Uu and practice making U-turns.  We danced like we were in the ocean to the song Under the Sea.  We made a U into an underwater scene and did our journal page.  
 
Math:  Addition - We read The Tortoise and the Hare and sequenced the events of the story and answered comprehension questions.  After reading, we played a Tortoise and Hare addition game.  They rolled two number cubes and added them together and moved either the tortoise or the hare in a race to the finish line.  We also did a farm animal addition sheet.  
 
Theme:  St. Patrick's Day - We discussed St. Patrick and the shamrock. We also read How to Catch a Leprechaun and played a game using gold coins and baskets.  They each had ten coins that they tossed into the baskets and then counted to see how many coins landed in the basket.  We also sorted and graphed Lucky Charms.  We traced and colored shamrocks and painted/colored rainbows.

Hello!  I hope everyone enjoyed this beautiful weekend.  Here's a look at what we did in class this week and the skills we will be working on next week.  
 
Recap:  
Jesus Calling:  We read Zacchaeus Meets Jesus and Jesus Loves You.
 
Reading/Handwriting:  Letter of the Week - Tt - We read Tiger Can't Sleep and the poems from The Zigzag Zebra and Lizard Lou.  We played "Ziggy Takes a Trip," where he only wanted to place objects in his backpack beginning with the /T/ sound.  We also played "What Am I Thinking?" and " Thumbs Up/Down" to practice the sound.  We also practiced reading words in the "at" family.  We used a big line and little line to make a T into a tiger and did our journal page.  
 
Math:  We played a bowling game to practice number bonds that equal 10.  We also read One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish and played an addition fishing game.  They took turns catching a red fish and blue fish with a number on it.  We used goldfish counters to add the numbers together.  We learned the names and meanings of "+ and =" and did a sheet where they had to illustrate a number sentence.  
 
Theme:  Dr. Seuss - We read The Cat and the Hat and played "Pin the Hat on the Cat."  We reviewed AB patterns and colored a Dr. Seuss hat in any pattern that they wanted to.  We also read Put Me in the Zoo.

Weekly Update

Hello!  First of all, thank you so much of the very generous teacher appreciation gift.  It was so very thoughtful, and I feel very appreciated.  Also, thank you to Allison and Charlotte for spending time in our classroom, so I could enjoy the teacher appreciation lunch.

Recap: 
Jesus Calling:  We have been reading Jesus Heals the Sick.
 
Reading/Handwriting:  To review, we played "Mystery Letters."  I gave them each a couple of lowercase letters that we have gone over so far.  Then I wrote the beginning strokes of a capital letter.  They had to guess the letter and match their lowercase letter with my capital letter, and then tell me the beginning sound.  We also read Chipmunk's ABC, and did some blending practice with our puppet, Ziggy.  We did an activity called "Put it Together," where I said two parts of a word and they had to blend them together.  We also did an activity called "Guess the Animal," where I said an animal word that was segmented into two parts, and they had to guess the animal.  
 
Math:  I had planned to do number bonds to 10 but did not have time for the activity that I wanted to do with them.  However, we did a money sorting activity to go along with our president theme.  I will include the number bond activity with our unit on addition.
 
Theme:  Presidents - We discussed that for Presidents' Day, we celebrate the birthdays of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.  I showed them pictures of these presidents and our current president.  I also showed them pictures of who the presidents were the year that they were born.  We talked about what the president does and where they live.  I also showed them coins and bills that honored some of our past presidents.  We used play money to sort a penny, nickel, dime, and quarter.  We then did a coloring a president coloring sheet.

Hello!  Happy Sunday, and what a beautiful day it is!  I am so ready for spring and warm weather.  Due to Presidents' Day and teacher in-service, this will be a very short week for us.    
 
Recap:  
Jesus Calling:  We have been reading Jesus Heals the Sick.
 
Reading/Handwriting:  Letter of Week - Ss - We read the poems from The Zigzag Zebra and Lizard Lou.  Instead of Thumbs Up/Down, we snapped if the word I said had the beginning sound of S.  We used colorful scarves to dance and listened to "You are My Sunshine" and "Mr. Golden Sun."  We played "Ziggy Takes a Trip," which is an activity where Ziggy could only place things in his backpack that started with the sound of s.  We practiced making Ss on the board, in our journal, and by making an S into a snake or a seahorse.  We also played Simon Says.  We did a reinforcement activity where I said two words at a time, and they had to determine if they had the same beginning sound.  
 
Math:  Number Bonds:  We played a couple of games to practice number bonds up to 8.  We used number cards and dinosaur counters to practice number bonds to 7.  For number 8, we used bean bags and two different colored mats.  They tossed the bean bags onto the mats, and then we counted how many were on each mat.  We placed those numbers on the small parts of the number bond and then counted them altogether and placed that number in the big part of the number bond.  We also used M&Ms and penguin number bond sheets to practice.  
 
Theme:  Dinosaurs - We read a nonfiction book about dinosaurs and a poem titled "Dinosaurs."  We did a dinosaur movement activity and danced to a song called "We are the Dinosaurs."  We discussed everything they knew about dinosaurs, and what we think might have happened to them.  We learned that the T-Rex opens its jaws 10 ft wide.  We also learned that its stride in about 5 feet, and then we measured our strides.  We did an I Spy dinosaur sheet to practice counting and writing numbers.  We also did a dinosaur craft.

Jesus Calling:  We read Jesus Walks on Water and Mary and Martha.
 
Reading/Handwriting:  Letter of the Week- Rr - We read Roar of a Snore and Read to Tiger.  We did our activities to practice the sound.  We practiced making Rr on the board, tracing in the air, and in our journal.  We also used a big line, little curve, and little line to make the R into a rabbit.  We learned that the raccoon is the Tennessee state animal.  
 
Math:  We worked on numbers to 20.  We used ten frames and Hershey's Kisses to practice place value and traced our numbers.  We also practiced tracing and coloring hearts.  
 
Theme:  We read Pete the Cat Valentine's Day is Cool and Happy Valentine's Day, Mouse. We talked about things we love and drew pictures of things we love, and we decorated Valentine's cards.  
 
Coming Up:  
Jesus Calling:  We will read Jairus' Daughter and the Sick Woman and The Blind Man.
