Weekly recap

Weekly recap and reminders:

Reminders: field day is Monday May 6. Please bring a water bottle for your child! I’ll have something to carry all of them around in. Look for the crazy pink lady waving her pink pom pom.

Tuesday May 7 is Friday U registration for the fall. I teach the storybook stem class and would love to have some of my former students in there!

Wednesday May 8 is the Africa party.

Monday:

In lightning literature, we started the morning with our curious George presentations. After we finished those we read Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel. We talked about some discussion questions based on the book and talked about what is a strong adjective verses a weak one.

In spelling, we did lesson 32A. It was our first day with 5 letters! The class did really well.

In all about reading, we focused on lesson 52 with OY and OI words. Each student wrote our lesson words on their white boards and finished sentences with my started phrases. We also did a read the sentence and illustrate sheet for more reading review.

In math, we did pages 120 and 121 focusing on subtracting with 10 a different way. Sometimes this works for students and other times it confuses them even more. I saw a lot of confused faces when they felt like they could solve the problem a simpler way. At home if they have their own way, that’s ok! The goal is for them to see lots of different ways to solve things and decide what works for their brain. We also did math ninjas today.

In social studies, we did an intricate African coloring page.

We also worked on something top secret for the mamas!

Wednesday:

In lightening literature, we reread the book and did discussion questions that dived into the story components. We also did a diagramming sentence sheet in their workbooks as well as a summary.

In spelling, we did lesson 32C.

In all about reading, we had reading groups and they rotated through reading with me, doing an Egypt hieroglyphics page and an Ispy Kenya sheet.

In math, we did page 124 that focused on using addition to subtract. We also did the word problems as a class.

In social studies, we went through some Kenya facts slides and they were able to color an African design sheet that Mrs. Koh made.

In science, we built our own constellations using marshmallows and toothpicks. They washed their hands before using them and brought them home for you to decide if they could eat them or not!

That was our week! Have a great weekend!

Field day is Monday May 6 (we are pink!)

Monday:

In lightning literature, we read This is London and did several discussion questions on it. We also did a grammar page focusing on if books are fiction or nonfiction. In all about reading, we did lesson 50 and focused on our words for the week. I had each student sit with me and read a few phrases from the activity book. While rotating through that they used 10 words from our lesson to think of a sentence and a drawing to go along with that.

In math, we did pages 113 and 114 that focused on a trick with 9 and 8. If your child doesn’t need to physically draw it out for them to understand it in their head and in fact the drawing is throwing them off, feel free to not do that step. We also did math ninjas and math table game stations.

In social studies, we did an African country matchup sheet with a map. We talked about how many countries in Africa are the sizes of our states.

In science, we watched a constellation video and talked about the different pictures in the sky people think they see. We also made up our own story for stars we see.

In math, we did pages 116 and 117 focusing on adding within 20 and word problems. We talked about tricks we use to get to the answer of addition problems and did our math ninjas.

In social studies, I brought in some things from home that my grandmother had given me from a mission trip to Kenya about 20 years ago. Each student was able to hold and see each of the objects.

In science, we used a light up globe with the constellations on it to see what we could find. We also looked at a glow-in-the-dark constellation book and created our own constellation heart using a pin, foil, toilet paper roll, and a flashlight.
