Week of April 29th

We had a busy week and the kids did a great job of staying on task so we could get everything done.

We read chapters 1-5 in our book Frindle and learned 12 new vocabulary words. This week we will be reading chapters 6-9 and learning 12 more vocabulary words. We will also be going over the different types of sentences.

In Math we worked on division with and without remainders. Chapter 9 test is Tuesday, so please send in your child's test. Thursday, we will begin fractions. Page 157 we will be doing, but page 158 seems a bit confusing for the class. I have planned on doing a dividing/shading fraction worksheet in its place. So to be clear, I will not be doing page 158 with them, but a worksheet in its place.

We will be discussing Hydrocarbons in Science and we'll continue with the West region this week.

**Field Day Monday, May 6th.
**West Experience Thursday, May 9th.

Week of April 22nd

We had a great week!
I want to thank Bethany Handley and Chelsea Koerten for doing all the tie-dying! The kids had a blast and everything went so smoothly! I'd also like to thank Laura Holbrook for providing all the supplies, even though her Ben was sick! We will be wearing the shirts on Monday, May 6th, for field day.
The class did an incredible job on their book reports! I am so proud of them! I have them all at home, so I can read each of them. I will return them Thursday.
The 3rd grade will begin Frindle, by Andrew Clements, on Monday. Once again, you do not have to buy the book. I will be reading it all in class. We will have new vocabulary words that we will be working on.
In Math, we will be continuing with division and introducing division with remainders.
Science this week is about alcohol and esters. I will be doing an experiment with the kids, that will be a surprise for all the moms.
This last nine weeks, we are studying the West region. A little bird has told me that the West "party" in May, is going to be amazing!

Have a great weekend!!

Week of April 15th

I want to thank Jessica Geist and Chelsea Koerten for throwing such a great Southwest Experience this past Thursday! The kids loved all the delicious southwestern food and the fun games played!
This week we will begin studying the West region of the U.S. I will start that on Thursday because Tuesday, beginning at 1:30, the class will be tie-dying our shirts for Field Day. Please make sure your child has a shirt for Tuesday.  :)
We will be doing poetry on Tuesday, so please pack your child's poetry book as we will be reading the poems after we finish our book report presentations.
And yes-book reports are due Tuesday. We will start our presentations at 10:30 and then begin poetry. I will not have time to do composition or the pages in Lighting Lit on Tuesday, if you want to pick those up at home.
In Science, I will introduce organic compounds and our science project deals with the fats in our foods and how they leave an impression on paper.

I will begin reading the book Frindle  by Andrew Clements on Tuesday, April 23rd. You do not have to buy the book for your child. I will be reading the entire book in class and doing activities with it. Mrs. Maria and I wanted to do a novel study instead of doing different fairy tales. If you'd like to purchase the book, that's perfectly ok-but it's not necessary. I will provide copies of chapters if needed.

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend! It's finally going to be beautiful after all the rain!!

Week of April 8th-12th

This upcoming week we will be having our Southwest Experience, so we will not be doing Science on Thursday.

In Science, I will not be doing the experiment in the book. I will be doing another experiment on acids and bases using lemons, baking soda, and food coloring. It will be messy, but pretty!

We have our chapter 8 Math test on Tuesday, so please send in your child's test. For the Math test Tuesday, please make sure your child has the measurement conversion chart I gave them last week. They will need it for the test. They should have it in their binder. I will post a picture of it.
On Thursday, we will be beginning division, with a review of multiplication and how the two go hand in hand.

In Language Arts, we will be finishing up The Wheel on the School. We will also be learning more about synonyms and homophones.

The next region we will be studying will be the Western region.

UPCOMING EVENTS

1. Book report due Tuesday, April 16th
2. Field Day- May 6th--I still need some moms to help me tie-dye, or if any moms would like to do the tie-dye, that would be awesome! Lol!
A white t-shirt for your child needs to be turned in by Thursday, April 18th.
3. If you are planning on ordering books from the book order, please have them ordered by Thursday, April 11th. After that day I will submit all orders. Thank you to those that have already ordered.

**The class has won a class party!! They filled the class Star Jar on Thursday with their 25th star. We will be discussing what they would like to do. If there is a type of party that you would prefer them NOT to have, please let me know. Since this is my first class party as an incentive, I'm not sure of the "rules". ;)

Have a great weekend!

Tuesday, April 2nd

Hello all!
The syllabus was very confusing to me for this day, so I talked with Ashley Butler and Kim Johnson and after talking with them, I have an understanding of what is to take place Tuesday.

In Math, I am omitting page 110, but I have another cut and paste activity for the class to do that involves grams and kilograms. Page 110 seems to be a lesson that is better to be done at home. :)
On Thursday, April 4th, I will NOT be doing pages 113 and 114. I will be teaching the concept of milliliters and liters in a different way with different activities. The pages listed in my syllabus for me to do, are best done at home one on one. Please feel free to do those pages with your child for more practice.

For reading, I will be reading the entire chapter 12 of The Wheel on the School in class. Please make sure they have their copy of the book (if you have one).

The syllabus says I need to have the kiddos do 5-10 words for their dictionary pages, but I will be doing a vocabulary activity with them instead. I hope that is ok with everyone. Please reach out to me if you have any concerns about that.

For composition, please try and have your child's interview written as a rough draft only. I will be going over editing symbols and how to correct their paper with those symbols. They will also receive an editing symbol guideline to keep. If your child's paper isn't finished by Tuesday, no big deal! I will try and help them finish.

**Just a reminder:  Your child is NOT presenting their interview paper in class.
You do not have a do a special project for The Wheel on the School and the only book report that is needed is the book report that I assigned due April 16th.

**May 6th is Field Day at Cedar Springs. I would like for the 3rd grade to be tie-dye colors. I would love to have some parents volunteer to help me tie-dye shirts a week before. If you'd like to help, please let me know! I also need every child to bring a white t-shirt to dye. Please have the shirt in by April 18th.

We had a great Easter snack provided by Allison Yoakley. The kids loved the Rice Krispies "nest"!

I hope you all have a Blessed Easter!

Upcoming Events for the last 9 weeks

Hi all!
First off-I want to say thank you for all my wonderful gifts! You are all so generous and I am shocked every time! Thank you again for making my first year at Oak Grove incredible!

Unfortunately, I’ve not been able to grade the chunking test for spelling, so I don’t have any results to report. I will be grading them this weekend and I will send a group text explaining how it went. I hope that’s ok with everyone.

There has been some concern about all the report and projects coming up for this 9 weeks. So, after talking with Christy Parrot, we are scrapping some things.

1. The interview paper will not be presented in class.
2. There will not be a special project over The Wheel on the School.
3. There will not be another book report due in May.

The only report that needs to be done is the one that I assigned and is due April 15th for Red and April 16th for Blue.

I hope this clears up any and all concerns about upcoming projects, but if not please don’t hesitate to ask!

Enjoy your weekend!!

It's Spring Break!!!!!

We had a great week leading up to our Spring Break!

John Stankus was our Star of the Week in the Red class. We enjoyed seeing all his pictures, especially the ones with all his family and cousins.

In Science we had another fun, "scientific" lesson-separating mixtures. We separated Chex Mix into their own stacks. Then the best part was, we ate it all!
Our week after the break will involve crystals.

Math this past week was a little difficult on both days. Chapter 7 test seemed a little harder than usual and grades weren't as good as normal. Then we started measurement and that really threw some for a loop. Please continue working with your child on measurement and where the fourth, half, and three-fourths marks are on the ruler. I had it marked in sharpie on all the rulers and some students still had a hard time.

We're plugging along in The Wheel on the School. Some students don't have the book and aren't able to read at home. I have read bits and pieces when discussing vocabulary words, but that's it. If you don't have the book for your child, there is a copy in PDF format online that is free to print off, if you choose. The week after break, chapters 8 and 9 will be read.

In our study of the Southwest, we've learned about the land, natural resources, water, and climate. Our next area of study will be landmarks of the Southwest.

**I want to say that I am sorry about the book report situation and the trouble some of you had with finding an appropriate book. The rules I am using are the same ones I used with middle schoolers. I realized that finding an appropriate book for a middle schooler wasn't a big deal because most of them could handle the books on those levels. Third graders on the other hand, can not. I honestly didn't even think about that when I was typing my expectations. I hope everyone has found a book that they are comfortable with their child reading, yet challenging at the same time.
If your child decides to change their book, that is fine. They can tell me the new title when we go back to school.

I hope everyone has a great break!! I know I will-even if I'm staying home!

Week of February 26th

How great did the kiddos do on the wax museum?! I was so proud of them and how they behaved while “performing” and how well their 3-way boards turned out!!

Our Star of the Week was Madeline Geist. She had 34 pictures on her poster and they were perfect at showing off all her adventures!

Last week was a bit crazy, so I’m glad this upcoming week will be back to normal. In Math, we have chapter 7 test on Tuesday and begin measurement on Thursday.
In Language Arts, we will be reviewing chapters 6 and 7 by answering comprehension questions. We will also be finishing our key stories from a few weeks ago.

Science is concentrating on separating mixtures and our experiment involves markers and coffee filters.

In US Regions, we will be reading about the land of the Southwest.

**Book report due Tuesday, April 16th. Information will be sent home Tuesday and your child must have their book in class by Thursday, March 7th.
