2nd Friday- Ms. Latham

Posts

Friday 4/3

Hey Friday Parents,

I will not be at school on Friday. There will be a sub who will help the class review math from the week.  She will also be focusing on Egypt.  There are a few crafts and info sheets to help the class learn more about Egypt since it is on our continent of the month, Africa.

Have a wonderful weekend, I look forward to seeing you all at Field Day on Monday!

Friday 4/12/24

Hi!

We revisited some of the math concepts covered over the past few weeks to prepare for the upcoming test next week.

In addition, our spelling story time was great! It's always wonderful to see the creativity sparked and to revisit the spelling words they've been practicing with the lessons this week.

Our focus in Art today was on Andy Warhol. We explored a handful of his iconic pieces, which was hopefully inspiring. We will do a few art projects with his style this month.

Our morning devotion centered around art. We discussed the various names of God and reflected on the significance of names. During this time, the class had the opportunity to either draw and color their name or a name of God while we listened to worship music. It was really special to talk about how God knows each of us personally.

Hey Friday Parents,

Today we did Review Rotations.  This included:

Subtraction

Money Counting

Contractions

Reading Comprehension

Addition

Sequencing

Alphabetical Order

We also built our own cities!  This was the most fun.  It would also be a fun family project.  It forces critical thinking, writing, coloring, etc.

As we enter Holy Week I pray that you all find time to rest and reflect on what Jesus has done for you and me.

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord

Jesus Christ! In His great mercy, He has given

us new birth into a living hope through the

resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.

Rocket Launch

This is going out to my Red Days class and my Friday class.  If your kids haven't told you, or you haven't seen it in a previous post, there is a Space X rocket launch on Sunday, March 10.  There is a new launch window.  They hope to launch around 7:05 pm.  If you go to the YouTube link below an hour or so before the launch you will see some of the activities that happen before.
The earlier window might allow more people to see it.

I hope you enjoy it!

Spring Break!

Spring Break Friday!

Today we made paper rockets (aka airplanes:-) Then we competed with the other 2nd-grade class.  We took the winners (multiple) and used our math measure skills to see who to single winner was.  It was a great way to reinforce math concepts and talk about the space program.

This allowed us to have great conversations about the current and past space programs, we even watched the final shuttle launch of the NASA space program.  Then we watched a great video that talked about the new program.  SpaceX.   On March 10th there is a hopeful launch of Falcon 9 at 10:34.  This is Sunday.

I slightly geek out over SPACE! I wasn’t much of a science kid growing up, but space, rockets, planets, and space shuttles have always gotten me a little excited.

Happy Friday

Hello Parents,

Happy FRIDAY!

Today was all things Dr. Seuss!! With his birthday tomorrow, we thought it would be fun to celebrate through learning.

Dr. Suess reading, word searches, hat making, math graphing, The Lorax tree making!  We had so much fun with this theme.  The class asked me if it was a party day…..  😀!!  Nope, just learning at its best!

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend,

Happy Friday 2/23

Hello Parents,

Happy FRIDAY!

Math- This week we worked on math review for the test next week!

Art- We did Tangrams today.  Hopefully, they made it all the way home and you all can have a little fun at home with them.

Spelling- Spelling has been quite fun for the last few weeks.  The book has given us the fun opportunity of creative writing.  The class LOVES this.  If your student is complaining about writing at home, creative writing may be your answer!

We used Mad libs today for a fun way to review nouns, adjectives, verbs etc.

Friday 1/26/24

Happy Friday!

In Math today we had a ton of fun working on place value with rolling dice.  I am sending home an extra sheet if you all would enjoy a fun math game.

Our spelling today brought out the creative writing in our class.  They are a funny bunch!  I love watching them be able to create stories and be excited to share them with the class.

For AAR I found a great game online that used emojis to create compound words.  If was a fun class activity that allowed us to laugh and learn! (Which is my favorite way to learn)

Have a wonderful weekend!

Friday Fun

Hey Friday Parents,

I apologize for not getting my post out last week.  I thought I hit submit!  I guess that probably speaks to the craziness of December.  Friday was a fun day filled with Christmas-themed learning.  We did graphing for a math activity.  The class had so much fun graphing their coordinances that I decided to forgo spelling.
They didn't mind :-)

This upcoming Friday I will not be in class. The class will have a sub who will work on a few review items as well as a Christmas activity.
I will be praying for peace and rest for you all as you begin Christmas break.
May your time at home with your family be filled with warmth, love, and focus on the birth of our Saviour.

Merry Christmas,

Mrs. Latham

Happy Friday!

Hello Parents!!

Today was definitely a fun Friday. We enjoyed a fun writing activity about being thankful.  We were also able to do a scavenger hunt that allowed them to learn some fun facts about Thanksgiving. We were able to join the other 2nd-grade class to do the scavenger hunt and have a blast!

Have a HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!

Happy Friday 11/3

Hello Parents,

Happy FRIDAY! I hope you all have recovered a bit from a week of candy and dress-up!

Math- We did a math review sheet that allowed us to work on the newest concept for this week.  The math problems that we introduced this week were familiar to some but not all.  Doing a review of those problems was great to help the class have extra practice.

Artist- For some, we have continued to work on our yarn “painting” of Starry Night.  For others, we are doing a different Van Gogh art piece using math to determine our colors.

Spelling- 12E was the spelling lesson that we did in class today.  Please help your students by correcting their spelling and teaching them the correct spelling when they are writing both in spelling and literature.

Lightning Literature- Today we looked at a few more diagramming examples to help review the grammar skill that they all worked on this week.

Next Friday

-Please remember to send your student’s reader with them to class.  They will be re-reading “Chasing Henry”.

Happy Friday! Have a wonderful weekend,

Mrs. Latham

Friday Yay!

Hello Parents,

Happy FRIDAY AND FALL BREAK!!!!

Math-We did a math review game that had the class wandering around the room completing math problems.  It was a great way to practice math without sitting in seats! It was called SCOOT! Every 30 seconds they found a new problem that was taped to the wall for them to solve, then they would SCOOT to the next problem.

Artist- We are continuing to work on the flip book about Rembrandt.  Listing facts and looking at some of his artwork.

Spelling- 9E

Lightning Literature- We played with the Cherokee Alphabet.  The class enjoyed decoding a worksheet and writing their own messages with the alphabet.

SHOWTIME- This continues to be a great addition to our Friday class.  The class loves bringing in things that they have made and they also love seeing all of the things their classmates have made.  REMEMBER: I must be made by the student.  Not something they found, or something cool they want to show.  It needs to be something created by them.  Story written for Lightning Literature, painting, drawings, something from a Friday U class.

.  I pray you all have a restful fall break and enjoy your time with your family.

Friday 9/29

Hello Parents,

I hope you have all had a great week welcoming Fall!

I feel like I have not done a great job of communicating all of the wonderful things we get to do on Fridays.  Fridays present an amazing opportunity for us to dive deeper into the continent we are studying, the artist of the month, and to reinforce concepts that were learned during the week.  Here is a rundown of what fun things we did today!

SHOWTIME!!!!- This continues to be a great addition to our Friday class.

Math- Revisited subtracting to 10, math facts for 6, 7, 8.  I projected one of the games from Math Mammoth onto the whiteboard and we played that together as a class!

Social Studies- We labeled a South American map and colored it. We also talked about more facts about the continent and reviewed some older facts.  We are putting all of these things in a folder that they will bring home at the conclusion of this continent study.

Artist- We are working on a flip book about Rembrandt.  Listing facts and looking at some of his artwork.

Spelling- 8E

We also made time for a little brain break and played a class game.

Happy Friday! Enjoy your Weekend.

Mrs. Latham

Friday 9/15

Hello Friday Parents,

Friday we had a great class!
We talked about our artist of the month- Rembrandt.  The class enjoyed reading about his life and the type of artist that he is.  Next week we will look at some of his paintings and sketches.

We also read about our new continent- South America.    The class mapped where the continent is located and read interesting facts about the countries that make it up.

We took some time to review some of the clock concepts we learned this week in math.  They used individual white boards to convert digital time to analog.  They had a little fun making Dr. Seuss clock faces too.    (translation…. They made the hour and minute hands of clocks look wild and crazy.   I just called them Dr.  Seuss clocks for fun)

As always, Fridays are a little louder, a little more relaxed, and a lot of fun learning!

Have a great weekend,
Mrs. Latham

9/1/2023

Hey Parents,

It is hard to believe that September is here!   Friday was a great day.    We started the day off with our “Showtime”! The class had so much fun showing off their creations.  It is a time that I know we will all look forward to each Friday.
We learned about Southwestern Art to go along with our North America study.  After looking at a handful of samples, the class was asked to paint their own.   Later in the morning they added silhouettes to the sunsets that they had painted.

Though Fridays are short and move quickly, I try to find fun ways to reinforce concepts that have been learned earlier in the week.   For example, using our daily schedule to talk about time or word games on the board to practice AAR.   It is relaxed and fun but their is definitely learning going on.

I hope you all have a restful long weekend! See you all next week.
